The 1997 series adapts the Golden Age arc through chapter 86. Continue from chapter 87, though expect some confusion: characters like the Skull Knight and Puck are barely introduced on screen and have a much fuller presence in the manga's early chapters.

The show stays close to the book here, with nothing major changed, cut, or invented.
Two very different adaptations, and neither is a clean handover. The 1997 series covers the Golden Age arc and stops at chapter 86. The 2016 series skips ahead past the Golden Age entirely and cuts a great deal along the way, which is why the usual advice for either is to read from chapter 1 rather than resume.
