MGM+'s eight-episode first season (July-August 2025) adapts the whole of Stephen King's 2019 novel, but changes several character fates and how the story resolves, so reading the book is a meaningfully different experience. Season 2 was renewed in August 2025 and wrapped filming by June 2026, but had not aired as of this build. It has no book to adapt: King never wrote a sequel to The Institute, and the showrunners have described season 2 as an original story that goes beyond the novel.
