The Haunting of Hill House: where to start reading
Adapts The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Say how far you watched, and pick the book up exactly there.
The single ten-episode season is only loosely based on Jackson's novel. It keeps the setting and some character names but invents the Crain family and its dual-timeline saga. Because the show is an original story built around the book rather than a retelling of it, finishing the series does not spoil the novel, and vice versa; treat the book as a separate, self-contained read.

Mike Flanagan's Netflix limited series is a loose reimagining, not an adaptation: it keeps the house, a handful of names, and individual lines from Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel, then invents an entirely new multi-generational family saga around the Crain siblings. Flanagan himself called it an echo of the book rather than an adaptation. Reading the novel is a very different, and much shorter, experience.
Spoiler-safe ratings are coming. You will rate and read reviews only up to your place in the story, never a hint of what is ahead.
