covers the novel's core arc, though a lot is compressed.

The 2024 film adapts the whole novel's spine but was cut down from nearly three hours, so much of the town's texture and side characters are trimmed. The 1975 book is the fuller experience. If you watched the 1979 miniseries instead, that version is longer and hews closer to the novel.

What the movies changed here

  • ChangedBen Mears' backstory is rewritten: the film raises him in the Lot as a boy and drops his late wife Miranda from the book entirely.
  • ChangedDr. Jimmy Cody, a man in the novel, is recast as a woman (Alfre Woodard).
  • ChangedBen and Susan meet and pair off quickly, and her father Bill Norton is cut.
  • CutMuch of the Marsten House's history, including Hubie Marsten's murder-suicide, is trimmed to brief teasing.
Sources disagree slightly on this one, so we used the earlier chapter. You may re-read a little rather than risk reading past yourself.

the moviesthe books

The 2024 Max film is the first feature-length adaptation of Stephen King's 1975 novel; it condenses a long book into under two hours, so plenty is trimmed. The 1979 Tobe Hooper miniseries is the more celebrated screen version and covers more of the book.
