Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint: where to start reading

at the opening chapters of the web novel.
The film adapts only the very opening of the story: Kim Dok-ja is pulled into the same survival scenarios as the web novel he's been reading, starting with the order to kill a living thing, and ending with a fight against a fire dragon at Chungmu-ro Station. That's a small fraction of the complete 551-chapter web novel (2018-2020), and no source found -- including Korean-language fan discussion -- states a precise chapter to resume at, so rather than guess, the honest and commonly-recommended answer is to start reading the novel from chapter 1. A webtoon adaptation also exists, but even its own 'Season 1' finale (May 2026) only reached the halfway point of the novel before going on hiatus, so it isn't the more complete option right now. The film also changes the fire-dragon fight's fated outcome: in the story Joong-hyuk is reading, only he survives it, alone; here, Dok-ja revives him after he dies, and the group survives together.
The film leaves off around chapter 1 (web novel) -- no source gives an exact resume chapter. Pick the novel up right there:

What the movies changed here
- ChangedChanges the fire-dragon fight's fated outcome -- originally only Joong-hyuk survives it, alone -- so Dok-ja revives him after he dies and the group survives together.
- CutCondenses and cuts significant worldbuilding and character abilities from the opening chapters to fit a single film.
The source is a KOREAN WEB NOVEL by the duo singNsong -- the main story is COMPLETE at 551 chapters (Jan 6, 2018 - Feb 2, 2020), officially licensed in English by Yen Press/Ize Press as a print novel (5 volumes out as of Aug 2026, since July 2025). A companion WEBTOON adaptation (story by singNsong, storyboard by Umi, art by Sleepy-C) is hugely popular but runs well behind it: its own 'Season 1' finale (chapter 311, May 19, 2026) lines up with only novel chapter ~271 -- about the halfway point -- and multiple outlets estimate its weekly pace would take roughly six more years to finish adapting the novel at all. It's now on hiatus for an undated Season 2. Since this site's job is to point a reader at a source they can actually finish, that makes the novel -- not the webtoon -- the honest recommendation here, unlike this dataset's Solo Leveling entry, where the webtoon itself is already complete. (Separate ongoing web-novel side/epilogue content has also been serializing since roughly 2023-2024, but it sits beyond the complete 551-chapter core story this page tracks.) 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy' (2025) was originally contracted as the first of five planned films, but adapts only the opening chapters, and no sequel has been greenlit as of this writing (Aug 2026) -- director Kim Byung-woo has said a follow-up depends on the film's reception, and its worldwide box office (roughly $7-8M) was modest, so any future film is noted here rather than given its own unit. A TV anime was officially announced at Anime Expo 2024 (Aniplex producing, Crunchyroll streaming), but the widely-repeated '2027' window traces only to Com2uS's Q1 2026 earnings report, not an official studio or date announcement, so it likewise gets no unit.
