What the movies changed here
- CutMuch of the book's initiation brutality is trimmed for a PG-13 cut: no eye-stabbing between recruits and no initiate falling to her death.
- ChangedThe factions feel more walled off; Tris no longer shares school with other factions, and her mother's visit becomes a risky secret.
- CutThe training pit fights are largely kept off screen, so you see less of what the initiates can really do.
- ChangedFour is written as noticeably more protective of Tris than his more guarded book counterpart.

the moviesthe books
The Lionsgate films adapt Veronica Roth's trilogy one book per film for the first two, then split the final novel: Allegiant covers roughly the first half of the third book. The planned concluding film, Ascendant, was never made, so the film series stops partway through the last novel.
